We Need History Detectives! Please interview your elderly relations & friends!

If you have a mobile phone or a digital camera or an MP3 player or a camcorder you should be able to record or film short interviews for the project. We would like to know old stories and legends as well as memories of the Hayle Area growing up, during the war, working life & fun days such as Hayle Regatta & Tea Treats. You will need to record the person giving their permission to use the interview in lectures, publications (print/ audio/ film/ CD), by libraries/ museums/ archives/ educational institutes and on the internet. Oral History is really about your personal stories, so we’re interested in real tales about your parents, family life, school, work, social life, beach life, events in Hayle such as the Regatta, Carnival or Tea Treat, relationships and so on as well as stories and legends about the area you may have been told. If you can remember the stories but not the dates please don’t worry as oral history will be just a part of how we try to re-construct the history of Hayle and the surrounding area. Just hearing how you lived is an important part of understanding what the Hayle area was like and how people lived.

At the moment we are interviewing people that remember Hayle and the area around Hayle, (for example Connor Downs, Gwithian, Gwinear, Angarrack and St. Erth), who remember the area in the 20s, 30s and 40s. There are a lot of memories of Hayle during World War II as many US servicemen were stationed here building barges for D-Day and there were German and Italian Prisoners of War based in St. Erth.
